I'm 20, have taken quite some lessons, but I've not passed my exam yet :p.
IMO 16 is too young an age, 18's better.

o_O Of course I pay the instructor, how else is he suppose to make a living? I think you do need lessons to know how to drive, how else do you know it? Here you are obliged to have lessons from a qualified instructor in order to even be allowed to take the practical exam.

And as said, here in the Netherlands is it OBLIGED to have lessons. But you Americans don't have a change gear in your car, right? You have automatic cars.
Good driving takes a lot of practising. Parellel parking is not the hardest thing imo. It's much more harder to respond quickly to any unexpected things happening in your environment and thereby to keep obeying the rules.

Something safe, not too big, doesn't look too awful and one that drives. Not too expensive. First things first. I'll start thinking about a car, once I have my license, not earlier.
