Tornado GR1 Desert Pink, "Mig Eater"

Challenger is finished.
Tornado F3 needs proper missiles adding instead of rearranged Orca ones.
Tornado GR1 needs bombs and fuel tanks adding instead of missiles and needs a slightly shorter fuselage.

As an aside, F3s from my local(ish) RAF base were up this morning following Russian bombers again.

I don't think you get many Tornados in desert pink these days either :p
Or GR1s, they're all GR4 now.

I'm doing Gulf War stuff at the moment, hence the "Mig Eater".

Well I'm working my way though this.

>>>>Ground Combat<<<<
Land Rover 110 (Light Vehicle)
FV107 Scimitar (Light Tank)
FV432 Trojan (APC - 10 passengers)
Rapier Missile Platform (Mobile AA)
FV4030 Challenger I MBT (Main Tank)
227mm MLRS (Rocket Artillery)

>>>>Ground Non-Combat<<<<
FV620 Stalwart (Harvester)
FV105 Sultan (Surveyor)
FV180 CET Terrier (MCV)

>>>>Air - Helicopters<<<<
Westland Lynx Gunship (Attack Helicopter)
Aérospatiale-Westland Gazelle (Scout/Light Transport)
Boeing Chinook (Heavy Transport)

>>>>Air - Planes<<<<
Panavia Tornado F3 (Air Superiority)
Panavia Tornado GR1 (Ground Attack)

>>>>Powers<<<<
C-130 Hercules (Paratroopers)
Sepecat Jaguar (Carpet Bombing)
Blackburn Buccaneer (Laser Guided Bombing)

>>>>Defense Structure<<<<
Rapier Missile System (AA Defense)
Swingfire (AT Defense)
Machine Gun Post (AP Defense)

Whether I'll get bored before I've done all that remains to be seen, unit making time for C&C3 is a bit longer than RA2.

They look great. The skin on the mig eater looks alittle cartoonish. But you'd never really see ingame. What are the poly counts?

Tornados are around 1950, Challenger is around 4000 but the extra sets of treads take it up to 5000.

The Challenger is probably a tad high (Predator is around 4000 including the extra treads), the Tornados are probably a bit low.

I've fixed a small error on the GR1 skins where the top of the engines had fuselage colour on them and stopped the house colour overlapping the tail markings.
Also put a fairly subtle dirt layer into the GR1 skins, made some fuselage adjustments for the two variants and changed the Orca missiles to reflect AA missiles for the F3 and fuel pods/bombs for the GR1.

Working on it.
If you set NeedsRunway to true on a unit they come out of the hanger, move to the centre of the building and then take off.

I'm assuming this is because I'm missing bones to define the start and finish of the runway, so it's defaulting to the centre of the mesh.

Runways uses the same bones as Generals, but landing doesn't work very well.

Land Rover 110 and Rapier Surface to Air Missile System (also available in strapped-onto-a-truck flavour).

For some reason the reflection on the Landy's windows isn't working, might just be the lighting on this map.
This is just the standard (long wheelbase) version that I'm going to base my combat versions* on.

Need to tweak the camo net on the Rapier system.

Slat Armour Upgrade - Reduces damage from missiles
Posted Image

I realise that this stuff has only really been in widespread use for the latest Iraq invasion but I was trying to think of upgrades and it seemed too good an idea to pass up. The concept has been around forever anyway.
I could've done it with an alpha texture rather tham geometry (the Challenger cage is nearly 2000 polies), but supposedly poly counts mean next to nothing in SAGE aslong as you keep the mesh count down.
I tested with a helluva lot of Challengers (which are higher poly than the C&C3 units anyway) and mixed other units - no lag.

Just incase people aren't familiar:
The HEAT warhead (RPG rounds for example) detonates against armour, blasting a molten jet of metal through the plating and punching a hole in the vehicle.
The idea of the "Slat" or "Cage" armour is that the warhead detonates when it hits the mesh, meaning the jet has to travel a distance before reaching the hull armour - resulting in it failing to defeat the armour.

That's interesting, I've never seen that slat armor on a modern MBT, thought it seems to be standard on APCs in Iraq now.

Yeh, they normally use Explosive Reactive Armour I believe (I think the Americans use that on the Bradley too).
I'm sure I saw one picture of an MBT using it before, that might have been while they were waiting for ERA kits to show up when they were making do earlier in the war.
