yeah, i've always felt that the EU is a government elected by bureaucrats. it's too centralized and outside the control of the people. Glad I'm not in it

Luck bastard...
I clutch to one of the last remaining artifacts that the EU will ne'er take from me, lest they prise it from my cold deceased hands. And that sir, is the Pound.

As a Briton, I am in favour of us retaining our pound, partly because the effect the changeover would have on our already damaged economy would be disastrous, even worse than what happened to Italy, and partly because it is the last symbol of a once-great nation clinging futilely to a proud past. But there would be a great many advantages to having the euro once the transition was complete, I just don't think it's worth it, especially given that it's extremely likely that in a few years we'll get a reasonably powerful right-wing movement who will absolutely demand the return/maintenance of the pound, and get massive support, even though the vast majority of the public have no idea why it would be better to do so.

The BNP are growing in popularity. It's sad really, our BNP after the start of the Credit Crunch is like the NSDAP after the Wall Street Crash.

Germany was in a far worse state than Britain is now, and Hitler was a far more charismatic, popular and well-known figure than Nick Griffin. Griffin just does not have the capacity to win hearts and minds that Hitler had. And this is a completely different day and age, with completely different media with which to win support. Hitler was forced to win support in person because there was really no other way, and thus won more support because he was a fluent and fervent public speaker and could guide the emotion of his audiences with a skilled hand. Griffin, on the other hand, has made very little and very poor use of the media at his disposal.

Honestly, there is no comparison between the two. A more accurate comparison would, in fact, be the rise of the Labour party just prior to WW1, when the incompetence and lack of problem-solving abilities of the Liberals and the Tories left the third party open to an almost astronomic rise, admittedly greatly sped up by the coming of WW1. Maybe, should WW3 break out any time soon, the BNP would see similar fortunes.

It was a mild comparison, as everything is so moderate now adays. Or so it seems.

I read 3 bad things in one day in the Daily Telegraph regarding the EU:
  • Because of some EU Brussels initiative, from 2010 Britain can no longer use the acre as an accurate measurement of land. Labour is just throwing our old imperialism and culture away. Damn those hectares. The Daily Telegraph people care; it was on the front page.
  • The EU are banning Crispy Duck because the ovens used to cook them do not have the CE (Conformité Européenne), which is basically a certified mark saying that it does not produce too much carbon-emissions. That well known global-warming-contributor, Crispy Duck.
  • And Sarkozy (sp?), the French President, is angry at the Irish and the French and Germans are trying to push the Irish to re-ratify the Treaty of Lisbon because they failed it majorly the first time around. The EU never give in, nor learn. The Irish don't want it!

And neither does anyone else! Fucking Lisbon treaties... We don't need an unelected, unaccountable, out-of-touch, overpaid, overfed, gullible yes-man to tell us how to live our lives. If we did we would listen to our local government, or to what our MPs have to say when they get elected and promise to make a difference. It's all a big fat pile of horseshit.

I just hope the Irish can withstand the pressure.

I care about my acres! There's nothing wrong the acre as a unit of measurement, it's just as accurate as square metres, just different. I will continue to refer to my height in feet and inches and distances in miles, and weights in stone, pounds and ounces. For example, I am 6 foot 3 inches tall, I weigh 11 stone 4 pounds and probably a few ounces, I live about 60 miles north-west of London and my garden is about half an acre in total. All of these make sense to people who know what they mean. The EU are just pissy little bitches who have decided that because they don't understand something it must be made illegal. Expect an end to legal biochemistry soon.

I believe QI had an entire segment where they dissected claims by the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph about the European Union, and found that at least half of them were completely fabricated.
Links (Especially the second one, that is the bit I'm talking about):

The British get so damn angry at Europe that any lying journalist can fly total bullshit up the flagpole and they'll stand around and salute. This is a pretty good indicator of how... uneducated some people are about it.

Thank you, Captain America. While I appreciate that your artificial, stolen culture may mean something on some level to you and your kith and kin, the heritage of Britain is far more extensive and taken far more seriously. We may not be the best at spotting lies when we see them, but you have no right to talk to anyone else in the entire fucking world about stupid laws and regulations. America has far more than Britain could have even if we elected the Monster Raving Loony Party for a term. There are places in America with laws about taking lions on the subway, or throwing bales of hay out of second-storey windows, or crossing the street while walking on one's hands.

And for your information, the more informed among us rail not against the EU, but at our illegitimate government's failure to stand up for everything we hold dear against an all-consuming entity that we as a nation have little desire to become a part of.

I fail to see how any of that refutes Spencer's argument.

The whole discussion seems interesting though, I shall discover my own point of view and then join you all.

I wasn't so much refuting his argument as the insinuation that all British people are flag-waving fox-hunters who care more about preserving the Queen than adapting to the needs of the modern world. While we're all very fond of Her Majesty and ripping apart small furry animals with larger furry animals, there's more to life over here than that.

I would give an honest opinion, but I'm not entirely sure what Spencer's argument is.... That some people aren't up to speed on current politics? That's not so much of an argument as a fact.

Banning people from the internet?

Yeah, right. Good luck with that.

My point is that the vast majority of Britain isn't up on European politics, and that most British journalists seem to completely fabricate stories about European law. This website is almost clearly based in the UK without any valid sources; this may as well be an opinion piece in the Daily Mail.

You mean the one based in France which is linked to three times? All the other ones seem to be in the UK except for one which might be in Germany. I mainly question the validity of this scare; the EU can't enforce laws like that, and it seems quite similar to many of the scares which originated in the UK about laws that the EP would try to force upon member states. Even with this law on the books, they can't do anything about it, because if I'm not mistaken, individual member country laws come well before EU laws when pertaining to civilians.

The EU has always been evil. Any globalist crap is evil. Lump shit together and eventually culture is destroyed.

It's the Soviet Union all over again. There is word out here of a North American Union and if that happens I might have a nervous breakdown. So long national sovereignty.
