It's true that we're already two months into 2012 and there's been no update yet. We've had a slow start but now we're back to maximum activity, working on the first release of Mental Omega 3.0. We're somewhat close to finishing the basic tech tree we designed and after that we can concentrate on remaining aspects of the mod like AI, game modes or missions. There's still a lot of work to be done, but we're on the right track to a release.

Today it's time to complete the psychic orb. Some of you have already guessed: it's a part of the new logo for Mental Omega and it was designed by CCHyper.

With the new logo comes a small graphical update for the website. Old sections have been removed. As time passes, we will be slowly introducing you to 3.0 by updating each of the information pages. Links currently available will mostly take you to pages on our ModDB profile which has also been updated. You can download all previously released versions of Mental Omega from there as well.

We have two other wallpapers for you, coming from KaneNash and iamn00b.

Now for more 3.0 content.
First of all, Hero Spotlight #2! This time we'll quickly introduce, or rather reintroduce you to two veteran heroes and a new female commando for PsiCorps.

There'll be two more episodes for remaining heroes and since all of them are complete, next spotlight won't take another 3 months to make. I hope.

New units from Azri_Apoc, two of them have been briefly shown in screenshots that have been posted at the end of 2011. We're getting close to completion of basic Allied side.

We've just started testing a standalone version of the mod. Soon, RP and I will start work on new missions and updates of the old ones that we deem as "decent" and worth updating. If you have any suggestions regarding new missions, please post them on forums. Also, I hope that with the next update we'll show you some more ingame action.

Logo is usual ace work from Hyper whilst preserving some elements of the classic MO logo. ModDB and website look good and wallpapers are nice. Good job on some of those units as well, Opus & Gehenna are especially nice if you count out lousy track wheel texturing. But what really struck to me was LC hero infantry. It's Khamsin from Mooman's YR2 all again, what with incendiary rifle and airstrikes. Hell, it even uses similar Boris edit. I thought you guys would be able to come up with more original ideas :p Granted I know from first-hand experience that it can be tough at times. Libra seems like a decent idea though. I guess her anti-structure abilities will be less than super with that kind of mass anti-armor weapon? And oh, PsiCorps also now employs pterodactyls... or something :p?

It's a flying scout unit. Dogs are amphibious now so Epsilon's one flies for a change. They don't have Psychic Reveal anymore though.

As for LC hero - there is no real sniper in skirmish anymore so I thought that at least one of the heroes could use such weapon. Also, there comes KillDriver from Ares which the others from the team requested to be used for Confederation hero, since they also have Hijackers and Drakuv to go with Confederation's unit capture techniques. At first I wanted to make a bulky rocket launcher guy based on Heavy from TF with some kind of implosion missile that would kill the unit's crew, but in the end we went with Morales. Incendiary nature of the weapon is on paper mostly, since Confeds have several fire-based weapons.

Also, Khamsin's sniper wasn't a railgun from what I remember. :p

Ah, fine. I guess it's justified, some sort of sniper weapon being one of the more logical choices for KillDriver logic and standard sniper rifles are just boring. To be fair, I was probably just expecting some sort of hilarious pun the second I saw his name pop up (Morales as in a morale boost i.e AttachEffect stat buffs :p).

Oh yeah didn't really take a note of that and some other important details on the first watch, probably due to what I think is a flu and a tiring day. Yeah I don't think it worked like that in YR2.

Can't wait to try the new PsiCorps hero. A pity I hate mind control units (I consider them nothing more as things to clog up my buildlist).

It looks like you guys are really stepping it up a bit more with some of the heroes. I only have one thing to nitpick about as you guys move forward with the mod.

I wanted to know if you guys are changing the story a little bit more for the ending. As much as I like the idea of Mental Omega being the primary focal point of the mod, there is one thing that bothers me. I really don’t care for the type MacGuffin plot device it becomes in the end. I was thinking you guys would do a little more elaborate narrative leading up to the final conflict. Maybe explore Yuri’s past in order to figure out where his real motivations lie. Just throwing ideas out there not saying that is the direction you wish to go and you probably want to keep things simple. However everything else is perfect.


EDIT: Maybe have a mission called “digging up the past” where there are certain places across the map that needs to be accessed (and dug up) in order accomplish the mission. All the while there is an armed conflict going on around you with two opposing factions. You would have the choice to go stealth to accomplish the mission or destroy both opposing parties. It could have little details of either what the mental omega device can really do; otherwise it could be about something about Yuri’s past successes/failures. It would provide a little more back story in the means of a written message for each artifact you discover.

I was... um... referring to about most of the arsenal of Epsilon/Yuri. I pretty much hate all those mind-control units. As a result I never use Epsilon. Even if I like that hero unit - I still dislike pretty much half of Psy Corps' arsenal and therefore, don't use PsyCorps.

No worries, Eppy doesn't rely on MC now like it did ages ago. I really understand you and ensure you... at SC and at HQ MC is an option, but you can really live without them.

Will the common problem of Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge/Tiberian Sun involving Windows 7 Laptops with Intel Graphics Cards be solved? To be more specific, the problem affects the menus and the ingame somewhat. In order to actually see menu buttons or have things refresh after clicking something you need to minimize and the maximize again, otherwise you just get a black screen.

This problem has been completely unsolved for me, and I'm still not sure of its cause (not entirely sure if the graphics card is the problem, but that's a safe bet). But this problem has rendered Red Alert 2/YR completely unplayable for me, Tiberian Sun semi-unplayable (hard to get things set up), and even Dawn of the Tiberian Age is messed up a little with a similar problem (not nearly as bad, but still present). I know the problem has to do with this particular engine, so I was wondering if there was any plan to look into it.

Ah well, once more about the other country-specific units gets clear I can think of an... appropriate solution... regarding Tech Secret Labs.

Well, PsiCorps has most MC units and it's.. two of them: Epsilon Elite (amphibious version of Epsilon Adept, who's available for SC and HQ as the only MC unit) and the Mastermind - their T3 tank. Other than that, there's one stolen tech unit which uses MC: Chrono Adept, and that's it as far as mind control goes. Of course, not counting the Psychic Dominator.

As for missions - I'd really like to do a 'choices that affect further objectives/missions' thing but for that I'd need Globals to be restored by Ares and I don't know if/when that happens.

Technical issues like the one you listed DVD Player can only be fixed by the Ares team, so if you have any bug from the original game to report I suggest that you visit Ares bugtracker at their website: http://ares.strategy-x.com

Hm. Well, the Mastermind "gets in the way" of the unit I usually use to kill enemy armor/structures - as I tend to use Battle Fortresses or Apocalypses for that task. However, now I've said that, and as I know that the Battle Fortress is no longer a costum devastator and the Apocalypse has a painful weakness versus Base Defenses, I just have to try all factions out once MO 3.0 comes out.


However, is the current OpenTopped function still used in MO 3.0, and if yes, for which units?
