Interesting sentiment there.... since having a job would most likely mean that you sit there all day making what "they" tell you to make... Its exceptionally rare where you get to do what you want day in day out and get paid for it.

Not really rare. You have your options - work for someone until you get enough clout to do what you want, or start your own... economic activity. Crowdfunding? What's that?
The Nexus has a system in place where you can donate real cash to mod authors. The reason it's legal is because you aren't technically paying for any mods. Instead, you are simply donating money to an individual as a sort of pat on the back for a job well done.
