Marine Corps to Join U.S. Special Operations Command
'WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2005 – The Marine Corps will soon officially join the special operations community with a new Marine Special Operations Command to become a component of U.S. Special Operations Command, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld announced here today.
Rumsfeld announced his approval of the plan, part of a sweeping range of transformations under way to strengthen the U.S. military and its special operations forces, during a Pentagon news briefing.
The new command "will increase the number of special operations forces available for missions worldwide while expanding their capabilities in some key areas," Rumsfeld told reporters. ...'

This is where some of the true lessons of history come in. The primary lesson:
A country, no matter how powerful, can not achieve decisive victory against an entity using guerilla tactics.

Air Defense Artillery Takes On New Counter-Rockets, Artillery and Mortars Intercept Mission.
'With hostile rocket and mortar attacks inflicting significant casualties in Iraq, the Army is moving forward with testing to support the counter-rockets, artillery and mortars (C-RAM) mission. The C-RAM mission represents a revolutionary approach to countering insurgent activities by intercepting rockets, artillery and mortar rounds in the air prior to impact; thereby, reducing or eliminating any damage they might cause...'
' The weapon system selected as the near-term C-RAM interceptor is the Army’s Land-Based Phalanx Weapon System, a reconfigured version of the U.S. Navy’s Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. The Navy uses its sea-based system as a point-defense weapon to protect the fleet from low-flying cruise missiles and other air threats.'

For game purposes this could be a mobile base defense unit. Deadly to the airborne threats, but with no armor, the unit would have to be defended.
Just a thought.

ZLC2000 AIRBORNE INFANTRY FIGHTING VEHICLE:
'The PLA has recently deployed a new airborne infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) capable of air dropping using multiple parachutes. Latest Internet photos suggest that the vehicle, reportedly designated ZLC2000, has been in service with the PLA airborne forces for few years. The deployment of the vehicle significantly increases the firepower and combat capacity of the PLA airborne forces. ...'

A Forward Operations Base.
'(DOD) An airfield used to support tactical operations without establishing full support facilities. The base may be used for an extended time period. Support by a main operating base will be required to provide backup support for a forward operating base. Also called FOB.'
'Forward operating bases increase responsiveness through basing flexibility and aircraft dispersal and by decreasing distances to support area.'
This new structure for game purposes would be an airfield about the size of a GLA palace and have the following capabilities:
FOB can build:
U.S. Humvees / Chinese equivalent.
U.S. Medvees / Chinese Propaganda Truck
U.S. APC (preloaded perhaps?) / Chinese Troop Crawler (or the preloaded attack version)
1 type of U.S. and Chinese helicopter.
2 airfield slots to build light attack aircraft (example Raptors, but not Auroras). JSFs would work well here if you include them in your mod.
For FOB defense, the FOB would be garrisonable just like the GLA palaces, and able to hold upto 5 (or more) infantry.
The Forward Operations Base would be a 3 star general promotion item, and have the build limit of one or two.

Forward Repair System:
'The Forward Repair System (FRS) is a high-mobility, forward-maintenance/repair module system that reduces man-hours for maintenance personnel. Mounted to a flatrack, it is transported by Palletized Load System (PLS) trucks in Force XXI Divisions, or by Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck - Load Handling System (HEMTT-LHS) in Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCTs).'

GVP 10 x 10 x 10 General Armoured Personnel Carrier:
'The General Purpose Vehicles (GPV) company, based in New Haven, Michigan, has developed a system of wheeled medium tactical vehicles, which include a family of trucks and a family of armoured personnel carriers. The armoured personnel carriers are: the 4 x 4 x 4 Sentry, 6 x 6 x 6 Commander, short 8 x 8 x 8 Captain, long 8 x 8 x 8 Colonel and 10 x 10 x 10 General.'
'The gun ports can be opened to narrow or large size to accommodate different gun sizes, so that fragmentation cannot enter the cabin via the gun ports. The rotating gun port doors are lockable to prevent opening or enlarging the aperture from outside.'
'The vehicles are fully amphibious without modification or preparations. Integral swim vanes protect the driver from waves washing over the front of the vehicle. Automatic bilge pumps remove any accumulated water. In amphibious mode the vehicle speed is 5.6km/h. Propellers can be fitted to increase the swim speed.'

Max Seating Capacity - 16-18 (incl 4-6 in cockpit)
Max speed road - 101 km (62 mph)
Max speed water - 5.6 km/h (3.5 mph)
Technical information above from GVP's homepage at:
http://www.gpv.com/p.../10x10_spec.htm
'The GPV vehicles have a large rear crew area capable of carrying up to 12 additional personnel in the rear of the vehicle in addition to a large amount of room for gear and equipment stowage. The GPV also has a unique "cockpit" design were 2, 4, or up to 6 additional people can be in the forward crew area. This large cockpit provides excellent visibility for over 180° viewing angle. Also, with the additional seating of 2 or more people in the cockpit, the GPV vehicles are ideal for missions where the driver needs to obtain instructions from a commanding officer who can be sitting next to the driver or right behind him. It is very easy to walk between the front cockpit and rear compartment of GPV vehicle's by a passageway around the engine compartment.'

BMP-1 Fighting Vehicle:
The Bronevaya Maschina Piekhota (BMP-1) was first built in the early 1960s and seen in public in November 1967 at a Red Square parade. It was called the M-1967 and BMP by NATO before its correct designation was known. The BMP represented an important shift from the concept of an armored personnel carrier to an armored infantry combat vehicle, combining high mobility, effective anti-tank weapons, and armored protection for carrying troops. The BMP is significantly smaller than Western APCs and has considerably greater firepower. The BMP-1 was innovative in that it allowed the infantry being carried to fire their personal weapons from within the vehicle whilst remaining protected by armour. To do this firing ports and vision devices were provided for each infantry soldier. Thus the BMP became the first Infantry Combat Vehicle. The BMP-1 carrys a crew of three to eight. The BMP replaced the BTR-50P and complements the BTR-60PB in first-line motorized rifle units. ...'
'A combination of effective antitank firepower, high mobility, and adequate protection made the BMP a formidable addition to the inventory of Soviet motorized rifle units. Designed to suit the demands of high-speed offensive in a nuclear war, it carries a 73mm, 2A20 gun with maximum rounds of 40 and maximum range of over 7,000 ft. ...'
'The BMP is amphibious, propelled through water by its tracks rather than using the waterjet propulsion of the PT-76, and has the range and speed necessary to keep up with the fast-moving tanks it normally follows in offensive formations. ...'
'Because of the extreme vulnerability demonstrated by the BMP in the 1973 Middle East war, there has been extensive debate in the Soviet Army as to how this vehicle should be used in battle. The BMP has relatively thin armor (maximum thickness 19 mm in the hull, 23 mm in the turret) which provides protection against .50 caliber armor-piercing rounds only over the 60° frontal arc, and the vehicle is extremely vulnerable to ATGM and tank fire. ...'

Again, I think this would be perfect for the GLA side(s). It's old, it's used by Syria (and others), and was sold by Russia. It would kill two birds with one stone, being both an APC, and an amphibious unit. Balance wise it would round things out nicely since the U.S. will have a hovertank, and the Chinese sides have their troop crawlers.
If you think that this unit is too much for the GLA, you could always put restrictions on it. Such as a build limit and/or as a general's promotion item.
