Which SOF group should we include as US elite infantry? Delta seem to be counter-terrorist group and do not fit for the worlwide conflict, green berets "seem to be covered in dust and web", and their mention reminds of Vietnam and cold war. Probably SEAL?

Are they gonna be like hero units or can be bought within Generals points? I couldn't think of any other that Seals or Delta. I blame Hollywood! ;)

Anyway, wikipedia here has a pretty decent lists of spec ops forces in here

Ironically i have created this thread just after reading exacly this list. Right now those names are just names to me, and i can't be sure if i'll come with decision after reading all specific texts on wiki.

As for rangers - they seem to be nothing more than advanced motorized infantry to me. What i am looking for is some group trained in the most bizzare ways, capable of carrying out long operations deep behind enermy lines. Something like russian Vympel or british SAS groups.

[I blame Hollywood]

After watching Tears of the Sun, my vote goes to the Navy Seals! ;)

Well I have good reason behind the Rangers.

Special Operations Forces are not battlefield combatants. They go in and take down important targets, and then they leave. SAGE and the generals engine is really not geared towards that.

The Rangers are an SOF but they are less so than a lot of others. Not in training, there they still excel. It is how they are used.

If you throw in SEALs or Green Berets, people are damn well going to use them in buildings and as combat infantry as opposed to their true use.

Rangers, however, aren't that kind of troop. While an elite group of soldiers, they are stil used in combat.

I hope this helps.

well the military unit that best fits that description is the Green Berets, they are the only spec ops group that actually work with indiginous forces.

Wrong, every other US SOF does that as well, even the regular grunts do it nowadays, just look at Iraq and Afghanistan.

I actually think you should have Rangers, SF, and SEALs...if done properly they could all be extremely useful and necessary.

Rangers are a quick strike raiding force, 'shock troops' if you will. They are special operations forces but act more along the lines of extremely high speed and well equipped light infantry.

Special Forces are unconventional warfare experts with specialty in the 'hearts and minds' and indigenous training/advising role. They can kickass, but it's not their top priority.

SEALs are more centered to direct action, they're trained for everything but their main purpose is to make a low profile approach to a target, destroy it, and leave before anyone knows what happened. Doing all of this with as little manpower possible.

Just put in CIA special units, they are the best in the USA. Well, not exactly military, but close enough.
