If it was before then Merry would win. But if it was after Pippin would win
What about a tag team. Sauron tag WitchKing vs Aragorn tag Gandalf?

Sauron in Physical form, Aragorn has Anduril and Gandalf is white

Evil...

reasins i would think otherwise
1. The full extent off gandalf MIGHT win it for the good guys!!

heres how i would say it would go...

after a period of dueling of aragorn and the WK
Sauron Hits aragorn with a blow from his mace...
aragorn is out of the picture now..
gandalf (im not a big person on gandalf and wizards) depending on the extent of his magic and special abilities...
i wouldit would end with SAURON dominating...

i dont know but Sauron and the WK are #3 and #1 of my fave characters in LOTR
although gandalf would put up a good fight...evil wins(in this case)

then

New matchup!!!

what would the turnout be if the best friended pair in tolkiens series and peter jacksons films

Gimli vs Legolas

who would win @ range
and who at sword/axe fighting

i would say:
@ Ranged...
Gimli<Legolas

slow dwarf + elf + arrows...end of story
(i dont believe gimli when he says they were natural sprinters)

@non-ranged
SAME!
Gimli<Legolas

a win for a dual bladed swift Prince over a slow dwarven warrior will i think come swiftly...although gimli would but up a good fight!!

Well, whether you THINK it or not, dwarves are supposed to be great sprinters. It is long distance running that they're no good at. (Hint: It's the short legs!)

Actually, I think it's the other way around. Dwarves have great endurance, such as when Dain's army made it to the Battle of 5 Armies, but I don't recall any time of them known for their sprinting.

Dwarves would often carry huge loads on their backs as well as their weapons and armor, and still be able to march quickly for days. Like Elven said, Dain and his dwarves managed to march from the Iron Hills to Erebor within a day or two. As for Gimli vs Legolas, I wouldn't count Gimli out so quickly. Gimli is a lot better armoured than Legolas, and his dwarven axe would be just as good quality as Legolas' elven knives. Throughout the books, Gimli managed to equal (and beat) Legolas' kills, despite Legolas having a bow for the most part. I also think that it would take multiple wounds to take down Gimli, whereas Legolas would probably be killed with a single, well-placed axe blow.

How about Imrahil vs Eomer?

Gimli has an open-faced helmet, arrow to face: game over. In melee, I would give it to Gimli in most cases, since axe>>>>>>knife. Armor is good too, especially since Lego is tall and has to go mostly for the head and shoulders, and guess where Gimli is mostly armored?

Imrahil vs. Eomer. I think Imrahil has the skill, discipline, and experience, Eomer has youth and vigor. I'd go with Imrahil.

New match-up(s):

1) Elrond VS. Saruman
2) WitchKing VS. Khamul
3) Tom Bombadil VS. Sauron
4) Aragorn (No Flame of the West) VS. Gimli
5) Glorfindel VS. Galadriel

What do you guys think?

I like how people first post a match-up and then give their own thoughts. It is like asking the audience a philosophical question and answering it yourself.

I like how this is supposed to interesting matchups but three out of your five are bleedin' obvious who would win.

Here's one:
Alatar VS Pallando.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Tough one.
I don't know much about the blue wizards, but there is just one difference that I am aware of. One of the two was sent first, while the Valar decided later on that the other one would be sent too.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda, it was Alatar who was chosen as one of the first three wizards to be sent. I would say that because of this, Alatar is stronger than Pallando, but then again, is that in battle or in leadership-skills?

HINT:

The etymologies of the additional names, that Tolkien later attributed to them, might be an important clue. (and possible the reason why Vort posted that question :wink_new: )

I was gonna pick those 2 but I havn't read much about them. I checked them in the Thain's Book and that wasn't much help either. I would say Alatar though because he came before Pollando... I think :wink_new:

from Thains Book, Names & Etymology:

The names of the Blue Wizards are given as Morinehtar and Rómestámo in a note written by Tolkien late in life (HoME XII). It is not clear whether these names were intended to replace the names Alatar and Pallando, or whether Morinehtar and Romestamo were alternate names for the Blue Wizards, possibly those given to them by the people of Middle-earth.

The meanings of the names Alatar and Pallando are not known. Pallando may contain the element palan meaning "far." The name Morinehtar is translated as "Darkness-slayer" and Rómestámo is translated as "East-helper."

Note: the original names of Alatar and Pallando (as the other names Olórin, Curumo and Aiwendil) were Valarin, as they were the ones used by Manwë. Morinehtar and Rómestámo are in the high-elven language, and as such not used in Middle-earth in the Third Age (except maybe by the Elves) ... the same goes of course for their original Valarian names.

Furthermore, according to the lore, the wizards never revealed their true names in Middle-earth. Gandalf only did so when his mission was accomplished, after the War of the Ring.

Score right now:

Alatar, aka Morinehtar: 3
Pallando, aka Rómestámo: 0

I don't think we'll get much closer to a decisive outcome of this match, unless Vort has some inside information not available to the general public.

Next challenge:

*someone* in possession of the One Ring >< Sauron

Who would be able to stand face to face with The Dark Lord and successfully challenge him? ... chose your contender wisely.

Who would win?
