Also the sniper rifle didn't sit so well with the resourceful hunter in the wild theme of the model - with his traps, wolf pelt etc. And then it came to me - Rambo's been on cable a lot recently. A composite bow! One that can fire normal arrows or explosive tip for those pesky tanks.
A non-textured WiP for y'all.

The Bow isn't but explosive-tipped arrows hurtled at high velocity to the fact this is the year 40,000AD and bow technology is vastly superior then bow technology of today. You do the creative math -- bow mechanics could have been drastically re-invented much like how old fads come back into style as someone took an old idea and improved it for modern use. This isn't a medieval bow we're talking here: its a hyper-era one fine tuned to send specially-contoured arrows projectiles with installed-munitions at its tip to transect enemy armour or whatever. This is such a huge debate over nothing where some imagination can be used to rationalize the use of ancient tech for modern purposes. Cue the punch line: "The Bow, reinvented".how is a bow meant to penetrate power armour? and how many arrows can he fit up his @55

This seems to keep coming up and I think we need to draw a line between fluff and army lists.
Is it totally out of line with SW ethos (fluff) for a Wolfscout to use a high-tech composite bow? I would say not.
Is it on the codex SW army list? No.
I don't see however that army list = fluff. Many of the best golden demon conversions etc have bent the army lists a little, but kept in line with the ethos of the army. Some gaming clubs have in-house rules. GW itself has 'chapter-approved' house rules, variations, scenarios. This hobby REALLY REALLY isn't so strict. The rules are there to provide a level playing field. But in DOW we have balancing for that. And it's a lot harder to cheat in DOW...
I can only imagine that's it's the people who recently joined the hobby that are lobo-locked into the one single point-for-point incarnation of an army. I remember the days when space marines wended their way through space crusade corridors with hovering tarantula platforms, facing armies of orks, necrons, chaos marines and ED209 inspired dreadnoughts, all fighting together. How things have changed! (gets all teary-eyed). And yes, bows were once in the wargear book of dear old W40K (still have it somewhere back in a box in ol' blighty).
I am super-strict when it comes to the ethos of the army. You won't find anything in our mod that really knocks the concept of 'Space Wolf'. I mean, I'm pretty damn certain the native Fenrisians from which the SW hail use bows (along with axes). Hell some imperial guard still use lances! So we're actually deadly true to the fluff, just not to the army list. This is not a closer-to-codex mod that aims to exactly reproduce the army list. Sorry, but it ain't.
Think of it like a film adaptation of a book. Take Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson changed a few things, showed a few things the books didn't, but he never really broke from the source material, and I would argue he often made it better (with a few exceptions). But because the medium is different, the film will ALWAYS be a little different from the book. And the same here - this is not TT, this is DOW, but this is not some random creation we just cooked up over dinner, it's Games Workshop's the Space Wolves, just how we see them.
I don't favor one thread over another, I just don't like to repeat myself. Realism is interesting, but not the most vital 40K ideology. How about explosive tipped arrows? Rocket-propelled bolts (like bolter rounds in arrow form)?
Let's all just calm down and have some fun. If you want me I'll be in the Fang texturing. Mephistoned out.
