Hey everybody :p

So i've posted this topic in the {IP} Clan Forums, which explains my ideas for a regularly updated series of tutorials, that will deal with a wider and more specific range of mapping topics. Hopefully any of you beginner, intermediate, or advanced mappers will be able to learn from them, and help contribute your own thoughts and ideas to the mapping community

I'll be posting a small update in this topic, as i create the main topics in the {IP} forums :p

Feel free to comment and let me know what you thought or how useful you found it. Like i mentioned in the announcement thread in {IP}, i'm happy to take suggestions if there's anything specific people would like to know about :crazed:

Could you do a map.ini tutorial for complete dumb-asses :) ? I know that there are some decent map.ini tutorials out there but sometimes you really have to surf through the google pages to find a good one. Or at least last time I had to really search google for a map.ini tutorial :p .

I'm sure that it's easy but it's just not that easy to find a map.ini tutorial that explains both the beginners' and advanced players' methods.

I'm pretty sure that you're already hard at work on your next tutorial, Haldir, but map.ini's could be something you might consider for a future tutorial.

Watch, someone will post a link to a really awesome map.ini tutorial from page 1 of google... ;)

Thanks guys :p I'll keep them coming. I've been trying to create more of a link between the two forums, which is why i've been posting them over at {IP}. But eventually, i'd probably like to compile all of the tutorials into another downloadable pdf tutorial. That's way in the future though ;)

I'm pretty useless at map.ini's to be honest :) If you're asking how to make a map.ini, Rob's tutorial is the best i've read, which i've also touched on in my Extended Guide to Mapping. If you're wondering about the coding though, i really am an amateur. My coding knowledge stops at renaming objects, adding snow, or making trees indestructible ;)

To be honest, once you know how to make a map.ini/where to put it, it all comes down to coding. From what i understand, you can change pretty much anything with code, though you can't add new art etc. But yeah, i might try and include something on map.ini's at some point. I'm sure one of the other IP guys would have something :)

My advice is to stay away from map.ini tutorials. Like modding, there's multiple ways to make a power/solve a problem, but in map.ini it's more restrictive, and you need to develop your own way at looking at a coding problem. Your best bet is to look at other peoples' completed map.inis and work on from there.

My advise is to ask people how you do specific things that you want to find out how to do (and note where they get the code from and how to adapt it) and from there gradually build up an understanding of how to do things. After a short while you will be working out how to do things for yourself and you'll barely ever need to ask about things.

Well seeing as this last tutorial was a bit late (uni. gah ), there's two new tutorials today instead of one.

First, The Best Guest has put up a small tutorial that will show you how to script a Day and Night Cycle on your map :good:

Second, i've uploaded another tutorial, this time on Snowy Maps, which also includes a map.ini for BFME 1 snow.

Make sure to check them out :thumbsupsmiley:

map.ini tutorials should be avoided. I would reccomend finding a mentor that can actually teach you.
Or or looking at other peoples and seeing how they did theirs as Puppet mentioned.

really nice tutorials. :w00t: Could you please add a tunnel/cave tutorial next? Something to help people replicate the look of moria or the Blue Mountains maps

Nah, that technique is my little secret :w00t: Maybe later sometime, though it's easy enough to work out if you open up some of the maps in Worlbuilder.

The tutorials have been pretty non-existent for the last while (everyone at IP's been quite busy), but i'll try and smash one out sometime soon :p

Huh, maybe i can try and figure it out once i get worldbuilder working again :p

I'll also have to figure out how to make rapids in the RotWK WB. That techniques been eluding me for a while ;)
