So, a new LotR game. "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor from Monolith Productions is the latest game in the Lord of the Rings franchise from publisher Warner Bros. and the game graces the December issue of Game Informer."

In it, players control a ranger by the name of Talion as he travels to Mordor, but long before it turned into the wasteland it was in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Talion’s family was murdered at the hands of Sauron and his army the night they return to Mordor.

Anyone else think this sounds terrible? Anyone?

A big steamer on the lore.

Even the basic story doesn't make sense, somehow there's a Ranger long before Rangers were around in Mordor which was already in Sauron's hands during the Second Age and he's possessed by a Wraith which in Tolkien lore have never possessed a person before.

How did this get past the Tolkien Estate especially with the bad blood between WB and the Tolkien Estate.

They have access to almost the entirity of Tolkien's stories.

And they still write a bad fanfic for their game.

I just don't even. Ranger fused with wraith. Even ignoring that the backstory makes no sense.

So much wrong with this. It doesn't even matter if it's a good game.

Love this part especially:

This system “assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion.”

Yes, finally we have enemies that can survive and then act in the world! "Damnit, Blubblub is back. I'm going to kill him this time!"

At least Conquest was a cool idea..

So the actual setting is between the Hobbit and LOTR, you know where Sauron had been living that whole time...

I think the story is that while Sauron was moving to Mordor from Dol Guldur he killed Blubblub's family.

Also, what if this game was moddable - MERP revival? =D

Lol...

Just .... LOL

ok, it doesn't care about the lore.. we can live with that... I can, as long as we accept that its a fan made game, nothing more.

This idea though seems like a mashup of another game, maybe the old vampire game razuel where you seek vengence against kane.

lets think outside the box like they probably did, Sauron leaves a huge void or evil taint where ever he would go right?
So maybe this main character surviving gets afflicted by a wraith who like Vampire D gets fuzed with a parasite
where it becomes a mutual benefit. so your character runs around the world of Middle Earth with demonic powers that you unlock by syncing with this other worldly wraith?

I dunno, I'm making this sh*t up

the whole binding with an evil soul is not a new concept and many games have it from Darksiders to that gangsta guy who has demon tentacles that vomits goblins

This game is the reason why they killed MERP. ;p

Your face is the reason they killed MERP.

The response has been more mixed than I thought it would be, there are people looking forward to this.

You guys watch the videos with the Devs?

It left me even more uneasy, I got the impression that they watched the movies and nothing more.

Question, what would the end goal of this game be?
kill saurumon? cant do that... so then what? besides isn't saurumon dead and not have a body between hobbit and the trilogy?

The team at Monolirth has collaborated with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson and the artists at Weta Workshop to ensure that the settings, characters and story align authentically within canon.
