No castles in America? I beg to differ!

I've personally been to Bishop Castle in Colorado. The layout inside is wonderfully complex and a joy to explore (because it is nowhere near uniform).

Oh, sure, it may not have the size or hundreds of years of history that European castles do, but can any of the European castles claim they were built entirely by one man only?

At any rate, a fascinating place to visit. And it is a castle.

Construction of the castle did not begin until 1969

But this makes it lame. I could count Disney Castle, too... :thumbsupsmiley:

Careful. This link is DANGEROUS. Do NOT click it. This one, however, is fine.

I had the meaning of life in my signature, but it exceeded the character limit.

I did point out that it wouldn't be winning any medieval landmark awards.

Also, the so-called Disney castle is just a restaurant in the shape of a castle. Yes, I know this for a fact. It's sheer size is nothing more than a testament to the money that the House of Mouse possesses.

Actually, it's sheer size is a well-made optical illusion.
It has been reported that some victims of rape, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being raped. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP

Exactly. What I like the most about these ancient places is the history behind them, the politics in their trading-of-hands, the sieges and the damage done, et cetera. These days, building a castle just isn't as impressive anymore, and there's no history at all.

I already knew of that castle though, and it looks really cool.

But not as cool as the one in my backyard. Ho ho.

No fuel left for the pilgrims

The Kremlin has to be one of my favourite castle-complexes, for its rich but dark history. And obviously the pomp and circumstance of St. Basil's Cathedral. Anglo-Medieval castles are still wonderful to behold - Warwick Castle is my favourite.

There's a fort in St. Augustine, Florida. It's called the Castillo de San Marcos. Been to it several times. There also is Fort Matanzas, which was a lookout post for Castillo de San Marcos. Both structures are made almost entirely out of coquina. You can actually see impression marks on the walls where cannon balls struck.

Wow...I have such a horrible memory. I lived in Florida for two years, and I still completely forgot about those two Spanish ones.

Those are just fortified outposts, not castles. They were built to be garrisoned, not built to be a home for the local lord wherein troops could also be housed.

My favourite castle, just on sheer epic view potential, is Beynac-et-Cazenac, in the Dordogne in France.

probably not, but this castle can't either :umad:
If i may quote the first part of the text in the link you gave us:

Bishop Castle started as a family construction project

;)

as for the topic of great castles, I'd have to check my memory about which castle I like best. :)
If the above post offended you in any way,
please take note that, until further notice, I don't care, so get lost.

Last castle I've been to was on Wednesday, and the castle involved was Windsor Castle. Quite big, actually, and a lot of airplanes flying about there.

The "Post a Picture of Yourself Your Favourite Castle" Thread :p

My favourite would have to be Mont St Michel in France. It's a beautiful castle, layered with medieval cobblestone streets, which wind their way up to the monastery at the top. It's built offshore, so when the tide rises, the rocky crag is only connected to the mainland by a small causeway, and is surrounded by sea.

I've stayed there, and i think i've read somewhere that it helped inspire Minas Tirith in the movies.

And i realised i've never posted a picture of myself, so here you go ;)
