FPS
- Half-Life 2: The wow factor on playing this game for the first time was great
- Jedi Outcast: Lightsabers FTW!
- Battlefield Series: Aside from crappy support, I loved BF2
- Halo: great fun with a bunch of people you know
- Quake 3: a classic, get a bunch of friends and just... invent random game types. It also runs on everything :p

Driving/Racing
- I've never liked racing games at all. Except NFS Hot Pursuit, but that was more of a "teeheehee spike strips" thing.

Fighter/Flight
- Descent Series: bestest gameses ever. Hours of claustrophobic robot purging in dark tunnels...
- TIE Fighter: my favorite SW game ever... and probably close to my favorite game ever. I dig it out every once in a while to play the campaign, which has an excellent story and remains one of the first games to give the Empire a sympathetic point of view.

Action/Adventure
- I think the Prince of Persia games fit here... lots of fun (old and new ones)

Role-Playing Game (inc. hack and slash/dungeon crawlers)
- FF6: Wheee I spent so much time on this game. All of a sudden I want to play it again...
- FF7: I spent even more time on this game
- Crono Trigger: in the same vein as FF6...
- Oblivion: This game is plusgood
- Knights of the Old Republic: woo another great SW game

MMOs
-Blarg! Hates!

Real-Time Strategy
- Dawn of War: so polished... so much atmosphere...
- Medieval 2: Total War: Oh so much fun, and more of a timesink than anything I own
- Rome Total War: I find it better than Medieval 2 in a lot of ways.
- Empire Earth: Any game that lets you destroy giraffes with nuclear weapons is automatically great
- Supreme Commander: Makes my list, but barely - it's great, has some awesome concepts, but has issues

Turn-Based Strategy
- Alpha Centauri: I really do prefer this to Civ, it's just more... interesting
- GalCiv II: Funfunfun, I love the customizability!

God Game/Simulation
- The Sims 2 should be purged from the world
- The Sims 1 can stay. It was not that evil
- Black and White: Second one really sucked, but the first was just so much fun. Training the creature, throwing rocks at villagers...
- Simcity 3000: Perfect balance of realism and fun, IMO. Simcity 4 was a bit much for me
- Caesar II: I'm not really sure why I like this one so much, but it had very good atmosphere.

I really don't do requests and my Arnor Soldier is not fit for BFME. Don't ask me for either.

AoE is quite fun to play over a LAN. Trouble is that it's either ridiculously IMBA or ridiculously easy to get into a total stalemate deadlock, depending which techtree ya choose and which faction you end up as. Factions with access to Teutonic Knights (and Elite Teutonic Knights) win easily.

If have a match where cannot advance in age then watchtower spam wins day...can make total walls of them.

Then when all stone is lost your marketplace allows continued churning.

The game is nonetheless good tho. Just too easy to sploit the ass tactics.

Quake 2 and UT were first games to get me into PC gaming tho. :)

FPS:

Deus Ex
Great story, incredible detail in information and well... it's just great. Good action, lots of options, nice to puzzle around with. And the story, did I mention that?

Quake
Simple, fun, fast, deadly. And even if there's nobody to play against online, there's always the unbeatable run-and-gun experience of nightmare mode. The addons only added more fun for me.

Quake 2
More of a brainer than Quake, but great map design and a fun single- and multiplayer experience. Because red keycards just rock.

Unreal
The most beautiful FPS game I've ever seen for its time, and certainly much better than the resource-wasting sequel. Atmosphere, action, adventure, blasting stuff to bits. It's all there. And of course the story is very good, provided you're willing to look through those random translator messages all the time. :)

Half-Life
The original, not the sequel. A good storyline, coupled with some very intense fights of the time and the lovely reactions of the soldiers (soldiers shouting 'GRENADE!!' as you throw one at them just kinds sticks). Not to mention the diversity of aliens and of course the environments... building tension as you see all the weird machines and teleporters... another winner.

RTS:

Red Alert
Fast, spammy, simple, fun. And Tesla Coils. And Cruisers.

Command & Conquer
Not a deep game, but definitely one that got me hooked on RTS for good. The lack of unit spamming is actually a welcome change, and the game's so slow that you actually think more than fight. Great game.

Starcraft
Good not necessarily for its gameplay, but the story and overall balancedness. And there's just so much diversity in this game. Not my favourite but definitely a good game.

Other:

Transport Tycoon (Deluxe)
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this game. After 13 years, the game is still being developed and improved by fans. The freedom of options is amazing; building elaborate rail networks, crashing the stupid AI's road vehicles, building an empire of nothing but trucks... you really get the choice for yourself what to do. The lack of a set goal apart from 'make money' only adds to the freedom and silly fun to be had with this game. I started playing in 1996 and never stopped since.

I'll go with these in no order:

Zelda
It's Zelda, 'nuff said.

Deus Ex
The first, an utter masterpiece of an FPS.

Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
Awesome. Granted goldeneye is dated but still, nostalgia makes it awesome.

Final Fantasy VII through IX
For obvious games.

Thief
An excellent game unmatched by any games based in more modern settings (Splinter Cell etc.) nothing beats running out of all arrows bar water and attempting to finish a level by giving enemies damp clothing.

Castlevania
All the games in the Castlevania series are epic games.

Pokémon
A simple working formula for games. It's unique in the fact you can't actually spoil the storylines - they've been the same with 'Team Rocket' being renamed from blue/red/green/yellow.

Silent Hill(s)
Great survival horror or greatest?

Sonic (pre-3D, hidden rings is ok) and Mario series
Great platformers or greatest?

Abe's Oddessy and Abe's Exodus
If you can't understand why, you should die in a fire.

Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation
Much more enjoyable than the C&C series. People complain about SupCom but that's because they - like those who don't like the Oddworld series - need to die in a fire.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
I loved this game, it reminded me of Deus Ex and was very enjoyable.

Uplink
Hacking simulation, addictive game made by 'the last of the bedroom programmers'.

Counter-Strike: Source
Hack ridden, mostly crappy community but when you find a nice server, highly addicting.

Unreal Tournament '99
Remains one of my most enjoyed and played FPS games to date.

Taiko Drum Master
Drums! Japanese Music! Retarded mascots! Everything a weeaboo needs.

Civilization
It eats time.

I'm gonna show my age a little.

My first games were more hardcore wargames. I loved the naval sim Harpoon (NATO vs. USSR). My brother complained it took up too much space on our 20MB hard drive on our old 286.

The I got into flight sims, with Aces of the Pacific and Falcon 3.0 (well, the MiG-29 x-pack) eating up much of my time.

Then there was Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Hours and hours of fun.

Panzer General was a "beer & pretzels" TBS game that gave me an appreciation of WWII games that didn't include 150+ pg rulebooks.

(The general rule with all these early favorites was that they spawned sequels that I was nowhere near as fond of).

C&C95 was the next network obsession game. I love the comment about games that were slow paced enough to let you think a little and not just be about who could execute their BO the fastest. Having said that, I also loved Red Alert 2.

Generals, on the other hand, was the biggest disappointment ever. Previously, I couldn't believe that some people thought Warcraft 1 and 2 were superior to C&C games. However, Gens was uninstalled within a week, while WC3 and TFT gave me hours of entertainment (and I never even played online).

I was a Diablo and Diablo II addict for a while too. Avoided online because it was all about levelling chars, trading, etc., but another series of games that I got more than my money's worth just by playing all classes in Single Player (or playing with my sis...though it was more of a chat server for us than a game). If Diablo III goes the MMO route, though, I'll be furious.

For City building games, I liked the original Tropico.

I played GTA III, VC, and SA. Vice City was by far my favorite...though you can probably guess by now that I'm an 80s kid.

I eagerly anticipated both BFMEs, but was let down both times. Thank god for RTW and M2TW...well, they've been a blessing and a curse because my grades have been slightly affected by my obsession (and in grad school even A- and B+ marks are frowned upon). Playing BFME just feels ridiculous after getting used to Total War's level of combat mechanics.

The general rule for me now is: no quality single player mode=no sale.

Total Annihilation has just made my list.

It's a ten year old game that I recently got. Definately one of the best RTS games I've played. Very flexible order queue system and more units than you can shake a D-Gun at. It's also the predecessor to Supreme Commander. :thumbsupdrool:

Here's the true list and my favorites of each type:

5: Probably Call of Duty, Probably the first modern FPS in World War 2. I still play it from time to time. Blasting Nazis as a Soviet soldier on your way to Berlin never gets old!

4: Star Wars: Republic Commando. MAN I LOVE this game! Ok. Picture this: A first-person shooter where your goal is stealth as opposed to charging in guns blazing. Great Story-line too. Plus after a while, your squad-mates becoma lamost brothers to you. You watch their backs and they watch yours. Only problem, is after you beat it there's no alternate ways to play.

3: Counter Strike: Source: ..................IT'S A GREAT GAME WITH GREAT GRAPHICS! you get the point...

2: Total Annihilation. A great game. Not the best graphics, but I love the gamepaly and music. Unfortunately, my Install disk has a scratch in it.

1: Now I thought long and hard about this....and i have to say......the best game in the world is.....
not made yet. OK OK I'll be serious now.

I'd have to say Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn.
It's the first major RTS. It started an entire series of gaming. It revolutionized computer games. and It is still extremely fun.

Random list of good games:

RPG-Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

FPS-Call of Duty 4 (Not out yet, but looks sweet)

RTS-Commanand and Conquer. (Supreme Commander is OK, but a little childish, and Anyone that says Total Annihilation is better than command and conquer has major problems. I love all the command and conquer games.)

FLY-Star Wars: Roque Squadron

RAC-Burnout: Revenge

TP/Adventure: Probably Ocarina of Time

Side Scrolling/Arcade: Contra 3: The Alien Wars (The entire reason, along with "Super Metroid", I bought a SNES.)

TBS/Turn-Based Strategy: Either Civilization 3 (I have 4, but I LOVE 3 even more) or Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

SIM: Sid Meier's Pirates. God, I LOVE THAT GAME. 'nuff said.

Random Game That's Still Fun: Star Wars Battlefront 2

There, the all-time best game list.
I'm done wasting all your time, by making you read this....

Actually Dune 2 was the first real rts, and was the main influence for Westwoods own CnC series.

I personally thought Rise of Nations was a bit disappointing. Addictive, yes, but it seems so accursedly pointless. Compare to CNC3 in particular, which has far less realistic settings but actually makes you feel as if you've achieved something when you drop a nuke, open up a rift and fire the Ion Cannon all at the same time. At the same place.

Oh, did I mention the Brotherhood and its slogans? Peace through Power!

I could have sworn I replied to this ages ago. Stonkers (1982) and Ancient Art of War (1984) predate those games by around a decade.

GRAW2
FEAR
Brothers in Arms series (favorite)

That would be my list of favorite games. BiA has to be the best game that combines strategy and FPS into a war simulation that's much more realistic than running around hoping to pull the trigger faster than the other gun jumping up and down as he runs at you.

Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Rise Of Legends

All 3 simply exude originality and class, so therefore for me, all 3 deserve first place.
Natus 3.4

Corrupt program now requires constant reboots and does not function at all in majority of instances. Designed with a web browser component to replace AOL, it has exceeded our expectations by being more crashy and unreliable and with worse tech support. We didn't think it was physically possible! A general product recall is advised; when it does function it seems to require background processes Girl 0.1Beta to stave off further crashes. Will someone PLEASE remove that code, and insert Backbone 1.9 in its place? That's assuming we even bother to continue this prog.
