While that may be a liable excuse for the ex's mother, it is still the wrong sort of reaction and not a good reason at all. The ex's mother should be the more mature of the two. Sad, the world these days.
The mother should be reacting in love and kindness, no matter what "wrong" she thinks Mike did. Mike should (as he already seems to be trying) be an active part of his daughter's life....no matter what. Keep it up, and never become that distant, unknowable father figure.

A friend of mine has a kid and after 6 months the Father stopped trying and hasn't seen his Daughter in over 5 years.
The retarded thing is he still lives in the same town and probably not that far from his Daughter.

Well my brother said he knew this and didn't tell me because i would get mad (and I did!). He also told me that he (mom's boyfriend) did not behave well at him (my brother). Oh and mike gratz for being a father
