Dwarves are sneaky I suspect those spears are actually swords and only reveal themselves at a certain time under a certain light.

These aren't pikemen, they wield spears. They're perfectly described in the book, they're unique. What reason is there to make them generic? To counter cavalry and infantry? Elves and Men of Esgaroth didn't even use cavalry.
Sorry that I interupt the discussion, but I wanted to go further on this. The thing is that these spears are long enough to counter cavalry, and no the Elves and Men didn't use them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist? It's not like all Dwarves carry axes, or all Elves carry bows, like every stereotypical Elf or Dwarf does. Dwarvish spearmen were perhaps used against Wargs, or other cavalry-like creatures, perhaps even trolls. I'm not saying that they shouldn't carry mattocks at all, but at least not all of them should.
You have some fair points, but if the main part of the dwarves of Iron Hills doesn't use mattocks or broad short swords with a round shield, I'll be disappointed. And it seems I will be.

Anyone else think that when they did the casting for the Hobbit movies they just flicked through British TV and said I'll have the lot thanks?

Also - its says in the Art & Design book that the elaborate hair styles also show their professions. Craftsmen are the most elaborate, the way they present themselves show their creativity.

I can't believe they got that Thranduil miniature past. But those other elves have some fantastic poses. (I hope GW goes out of business with those prices, however). ;p

Some of the big ones are pretty cool like the Mumakil.
But there's no way they are worth what they charge for them.

New dev diary. A couple of spoilers, like Smaug at the end and some things in Esgaroth.
I'm really existed for the new soundtrack. Also looking forward to the movie, hopefully better than the first one.
