They are his wings. Games Workshop has had to redesign their Smaug miniature.
I am okay with this change, I like that he is less like a dinosaur.

Well we don't always get what we want, Lauri. Now's as good a time as any to learn that.

Indeed. If only Nori's wet hair variant was permanent, that'd be great. He actually looks badass, instead of silly.

I found a little peek-a-boo of the (I assume) Iron Hills warriors:

I certainly hope you're wrong. I won't quote the Norwegian part in my book, so here:
Their main weapon of choice seemed to have been the mattocks, though they also carried a short broad sword with a round shield.
The one to the left seems to have a sword sheated, but the spears aren't mattocks, and the shields are not round.
The spear is super-similar to the Erebor one, and they generally look way too similar to the Erebor dwarves. Except for the helmet, which looks ridiculous. Hopefully it's early concepts for the Erebor Dwarves, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were the dwarves of the Iron Hills either.
"Let's make the 13 dwarves look super-diverse (borderline ridiculous) to make them distinct. Let's make the dwarven armies look super-similar to make them boring."

These aren't pikemen, they wield spears. They're perfectly described in the book, they're unique. What reason is there to make them generic? To counter cavalry and infantry? Elves and Men of Esgaroth didn't even use cavalry.

In Peter Jackson's mind it all makes sense.
It is possible that they could be a sort of Royal Guard for Dain.
Also we're almost 2 movies in and no sign of Dain, Elves are stealing all the screen time from the bearded ones it just isn't right they already stole Lord of the Rings.

Dain and the dwarves shouldn't really come until the third movie. Else the entire third film would practically be the Battle of the Five armies and the aftermath, no?
Not sure how I imagne the second film to end. Smaug flying out, smashing the secret entrance and leaving the dwarves and Bilbo in? I think so. Maybe the third film starts with the sacking of Esgaroth?

He should have been in the first movie.
I wonder where the Elves fighting the Orcs are supposed to come in considering of course that never happened in the book, maybe instead of a party they escape during an attack?
They also show Smaug and Bilbo talking in the trailers so maybe Esgaroth gets attacked at the film's climax and the third starts with the aftermath and leads up to the battle.
The third movie would then have more Gandalf/DG stuff and even more elves because you know they are going to find a way to put Elrond and Galadriel in all 3 movies like they did with LOTR.
Alternatively maybe the Elves fighting the Orcs is the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur and they could be the climax and then leave the Smaug thing unresolved till the third movie.
Maybe I'll make a list of events in the trilogy that didn't happen in the books and work out how much of the movies is PJ.
I'd wager it's above 60% at least, even the trailers have mostly non canon content.

I think Esgaroth is attacked by Orcs that followed Thorin & co, and Legolas (& Tauriel, 'it is our fight!') followed them in turn.

Sorry that I interupt the discussion, but I wanted to go further on this. The thing is that these spears are long enough to counter cavalry, and no the Elves and Men didn't use them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist? It's not like all Dwarves carry axes, or all Elves carry bows, like every stereotypical Elf or Dwarf does. Dwarvish spearmen were perhaps used against Wargs, or other cavalry-like creatures, perhaps even trolls. I'm not saying that they shouldn't carry mattocks at all, but at least not all of them should.
