While you are waiting for a map editor / practising on FA2, I'd suggest you get a CSF editor and familiarise yourself with making in-game text strings.
I use a CSF editor used for C&C Generals. AFAIK it also works on YR and Mental Omega.

Turbo String Table Editor is what I use, it's probably the standard one. Granted, TibEd also has one, but we don't speak of TiobEd anymore
Also, a .csf file is a file that controls various text strings associated with the game (or other projects that use it.) It was used in Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge over the old method of using tutorial.ini for mission strings, and allowed the developers to store the names of other things in here as well for easier access (units, missions, maps, etc). Practically all of the text you see in game is handled in a .csf file.
I think what'd really be nice is if we knew what the limit was on string length and had it documented somewhere, as to not accidentally go over it, same with briefings.

My experience with the XCC Mixer editor has been less than ideal; it's always been kind of fickle for me. TSTE also allows me to make new string files right on the fly, so I'd recommend it over the other alternatives.
