#1116972 New W3D Importer!

Posted by NDC on 07 November 2021 - 12:46 PM

Here is the full changelog:

W3D Importer 2.0:

- Full support for decoding and processing BfME2 animations!
- The ability to bind automatically a skin to the bones not only using the wwSkin binding, but also the native 3dsMax skin modifier - this way a model can be imported to, and worked with in, newer versions of 3dsMax (note that exporting a model back as a .w3d file would still require importing it to 3dsMax 8 first, as w3d exporting tools have not been updated to be compatible with any of 3dsMax's newer versions);
- If you wish to convert multiple w3d files to max files, the 'Batch processing' option is now available to that effect - just locate the target folder when prompted, and the script convert all skn files in the folder to .max files, keeping of course the originals and placing converted files in the same folder;
- Note that the 'Split by dependencies' option has been deprecated: its purpose was to pull apart building chunks in BfME2 building destruction animations, but this is accomplished anyway by binding a building's skin to its bones - if you find the feature useful though, it can still be restored - just let me know;

Enhanced W3D Importer (W3D Importer 1.11):
- Imported BFME2 structures now retain their UV map;
- Meshes can be split by dependencies upon import;
- Imported meshes can retain their binding upon import, meaning that you can make edits (move vertices, edit UV mapping, apply new textures) without having to rebind the model before exporting;

#1116968 New W3D Importer!

Hi Fellow Modders!

Please welcome the new version of Enhanced W3D Importer, W3D Importer 2.0, which can now handle both BfME1 and BfME2 animations.
In the process of coding it I benefited greatly from the work of the team developing the OpenSAGE engine (a free open-source re-implementation of the SAGE engine used in our beloved series). They have cracked the format and added a decoder for it in their scripts written for Blender in Python. W3D Importer 2.0 uses their findings to re-implement decoding and processing BfME2 animations in 3dsMax using MaxScript.

Quite a few BfME2 animation sets are already available as part of the long-lasting conversion project, and I will continue to upload cleaned animation sets there, but at least now everyone will be able to access the full range of BfME2 animations without the need to wait for me. Here is the link:

Happy modding!

Best wishes,

Hi Fellow Modders!

Recently I've been surprised to receive a few requests for access to animation archives (which I had thought everyone with the link had): apparently Google has updated its security policies, which rendered older links unusable without my explicit permission or so. At any rate, I have updated the links, so access should be unhindered from now on. If there are any hiccups though, just let me know!

Hi, fellow modders! It is the update time at last!

1. Mounted Mouth of Sauron's special powers are added and can be downloaded in one archive together with Black Rider animations;
2. A few updates are made to the Black Rider animation set too;
3. All of Sauron's BFME2 animations are added now (not just his special powers as before);
4. A slightly updated version of on-foot Mouth of Sauron is added;
5. Dwarf Banner Carrier animations are added;

Until the next update!

If it was the 8th of October, I could link the new upload with the International Octopus Day - as it is though, it's just the Watcher, a cleaned set as usual!
Enjoy!

No quarantine or lockdown comes between the Nazgûl and their prey! Black Rider is now uploaded!

The drums will shake the castle walls
The ringwraiths ride in black, ride on!

Now, as this set is the only one on the list marked 'edited', I felt it was worth adding a brief explanation.

I've always had a very soft spot for the Ringwraiths - to the point that I wasn't stopped from recreating the set for an on-foot version of a Nazgûl by hand (it had been some time before this conversion project started). And so, when approaching the animations for the Black Rider version, at first I was thinking of just adding sleeve movements to the Gondor Knight animations (which are exactly the ones used by the Black Rider, up to a scaling factor), but then I got carried away by my fondness a bit and threw in a few of my own. I know that technically that doesn't make what I uploaded a true conversion, but I wouldn't do that if I felt that my additions aren't in any way good enough. I hope that you agree.

As I had to edit the skeleton to add the sleeves' flowing, the archive contains a model for which I edited rigging a bit so that the sleeves actually follow sleeve bones. It is not too fancy, but can be used to have a look at the animations in W3D Viewer. Included is also a mounted model of the Mouth of Sauron, who uses the same skeleton as the Black Rider, and thus had to be re-rigged accordingly.

Hi NDC. These Wyrm animations should work in bfme 1:  _atkb, _diea, _dieb, _smna, _smnb.

Hey Dickenson, yes, thanks for that!

Wyrm animations are added.

There are now also a few little tweaks in the animations for Dwarf Guardian.

hey NDC, just wondering if you could possibly be working in the haradrim archers from bfme 2, the animations set for the bfme 1 look a bit sloopy as they were never meant to be a land unit, also would be a great plus sharku's :D

And the Haradrim Archer is on the list now!

Also, sorry for double post but i have 3 requests:

IUSaruman_SPCA (thunderbolt anim)
BFME2 animations for Gondor Knights (GUCavalry) (bfme2 added some new anims to this set)
MUWchKng_HITA (being hit anim, was not in the WK.rar but this is the less important by far)

I'll look at those soon: I'm trying to get Goblins done, and I have something like one and a half sets left!

Oooof, in terms of animation cleaning it could not get any worse - with twelve limbs in total to take care of, but now it's done!

Spiders are coming everyone!!

Spider Rider is added on the list.
