I don't expect the MO staff to do such a thing, but how possible is it? It seems to me that it probably is and if so perhaps I could have the permission to release such a thing if I ever get around to doing it.

Oh yeah, I remember you working on that for Ares though, I guess it never was finished? Well, it isn't not something I'd consider game breaking in this case, so I think converting MO 2.0 may still be something to look at.

I think it is possible, but it would require much work. MO2.0 uses NPSE which is rather different from Ares.

Yea, I got busy and lost interest... then when I last looked at it (iirc pre-0.7 times), some changes broke the flying text snappet and I could figure out the reason. I planned to go back to stuff after I finished a new internal of AS but apparently my plans keep failing upon me.
I don't think anything else hasn't been readded at this point. Since we have AE-GenWarhead instead of Upgrade SWs and whatnot. Prety certain Bounty alone is the feat missing from Ares to remake MO 2.0 to a carbon copy.

@Petya: I think it would be manageable. When you think about it, most of it will be tag changes. Superweapons may need the most reworking, but otherwise a large portion of MO is just standard modding when you think about it.
@Graion: That's my thinking, if so I figure the improved stability from Ares may make 2.0 would be good if anyone wants to go back and play it like myself, I got nostalgic over the campaign.

Well, Ares has both bounties and saves working now, so if there's still any intent of making the port, it's the appropriate time.

Kinda necroposting, but having some spare time I've decided to try my hand at this, so here's what I've made so far:
https://drive.google...iew?usp=sharing
NOTE: This is not a 100% carbon copy of original MO2.0 (and I don't think it's really possible).
The differences are:
1)There's no Tech Level slider. (Ares doesn't really have it, so... )
2)From what I've noticed, the AI behaves a bit differently, even though I didn't modify it in any way.
3)Remapable walls
4) In the original mission select screen there are 3 campaign buttons and a Mission list button. In this version you'll be immediately
sent to the campaign list. Yeah, and I've also readded Epsilon 10-The Mental Omega to that list.
5)Different text color for each side's campaign.
6)I've decided to add a bit more player colors for Skirmish.
I've also slightly changed some of the missions (mostly the Epsilon ones):
1) Fixed the ones that were broken( Dragon Dance and Mental Omega)
2) Added a sellout trigger to some missions, so hopefully they'll be a bit less tedious to finish.
3) Added some extra cash in finale missions to compensate for the AI changes.
I'll be honest though, I didn't test every single mission, so there might be potential balance issues.
And that's it (unless I forgot something). As usual, there might be some bugs or inconsistencies, this is just a small project I've
decided to do on a whim. You are free to modify it (if for some reason you'll want to do it).

If this is in a playable state already, how does one install and play it?

Oh nice, it seems I waited too long with my own Ares port xD

Ah, my bad. You need to extract the files inside the YR folder and launch RunAres.bat
Maps from MOMaps folder also need to be unpacked inside YR folder if you want to play MO2.0's skirmish maps.
Tested on the The First Decade and Origin's versions of YR.

Call me a necromancer, but perhaps to remedy the lack of technology slider, we could adapt this to Rampastring's CnCNet client, which could easily reintroduce that, and jump over numerous incoming hoops as well. Including the ability to potentially downgrade small snippets of the Ares QoL back to the classic way using checkboxes, sliders, and all of the bells and whistles it comes with.
I could smash my face on the desk a few times and make it happen.
Although it'd be better to have it as close to original, and introduce Damfoo's QoL changes via the multiplayer checkboxes, or as a separate downloadable expandmd. So that the old guard of 2.0 PSI won't come to your door with pitchfork and torch in hand.

I wanted to pop back in here and give a quick mention that I have been recently investigating using the CnCNet client and Ares myself and made a post over on PPM about how that project's gone. I used most of the source files from 2.0psi but started from a clean rules ini and copied things over individually. It's worked pretty well all things considered but the original country array was a bit of a mess so I ended up redoing that in a way a bit more friendly with the CnCNet Client.
That's not super great for campaign compatibility though and turned out to be a bad idea. I originally thought it was a necessity for the client, but I did just take a look at how Twisted Insurrection is set up and think I could have set it up to work just fine with the original array. With that said, I'll probably scrap the mess I have so far and start fresh. I'm a bit split on where I want to go with it though. I could try for a straight 2.0 conversion, starting with the 2.0 rules and hunting around for NPatch holdovers to convert to Ares or otherwise rework as best I can.
However, I am now leaning a bit more toward a reimplementation. The reason being that one of my hopes for after the 2.0 conversion was to restore the original RA2 and YR campaigns to work with it. That could still be done but it occurs to me that it might be less work to restore the original Mental Omega campaigns to work with something that was built with original game compatibility in mind than to go back and rework all the old missions to work with Mental Omega. That might drift into being more of its own thing though so I don't know.
