They should have retractable pikes. Enemy gets past your sharp pole, press a button, and 'poof', it's a short spear. Like something out of the future.

GOblins pike is IMO that short that it needs no kicking. Maybe keep their attack as it is but change kick to swords? I mean, Isen pikemen destroys buildings very very fast but with kicking? "I will come and and kick ur house until it's in ruins!"

agreed that they should perhaps attack buildings with a different animation because they can choose their distance from the target in that case so they wouldnt get that close.
and no they cant have swords, it would op them. not to mention it would be impossible to handle a pike as large as theirs and wield a sword at the same time.

It would not be realistic nor would it look right/appealing/whatever.

Not sure if these small changes are in great demand. It would be good to know.

Maybe they could have short swords that they would whip out when enemies get too close? Could be an alteration of the banner carrier's attack animations.

No, if they could toggle between them it would overpower them.

that could work i suppose. thats actually not a bad animation to use; pike stuck in the ground beside them (stabilized by them holding it of course) and swinging away with the free arm.

Hence why the roman army tore through the Greek Phalanx.

Wasn't the phalanx an anti-infantry formation? The idea being that you didn't let the enemy get close, and if they did, the pikemen behind would stab the attacking soldiers. Tightly packed phalanx is ineffective against cavalry because you can just flank them. It's tough to turn around when you're that close and holding a lethal weapon.

Well, if the phalanx was actually defeated, it was because the people performing it did something wrong. It was unbeatable at it's absolute best.

Depends upon how well set up the phalanx is, and what shape it is.

I meant exactly that, I said it in hard way.... Keep their attack power normal (damage) but make them have banner carrier kind of sword to attack when enemy gets too close, no toggle. Just as mike said

No the Phalanx is not a good anti-infantry formation. It is a good anti-phalanx formation. It is good only against itself. It lacks mobility to a severe extent. It is capable of attacking in only one direction. Is easily flanked. A formation of swordsmen only has to come from the side then they just start hacking. Do too the tightly packed nature of the phalanx the indevidual inside can turn and fight a flanking attacker. The only option is to drop the pike and pull a sword, if you are lucky enough to have one.

Defending a pass though, nothing can beat it.

It would have to be a pass only as wide as itself. Only a foolish commander would attack it with infantry then.
