Fire can also be used as heat without the flame - like with mirages in deserts :p

A good point, Mike. And SWG, projecting something into someone's mind is indeed entirely dissimilar to casting an illusion. By illusion I mean a physical alteration of what people can see. Like wearing a different coat and putting on a fake moustache and glasses, but with magic and more convincing.

And who are you to say that illusions aren't based in fire magic? They're all about light, which is related to heat, which is related to fire. Do not question the canon.

*pops in*

Arap Datrebil members can't literally project an illusion into anybody's mind. Their strength is not necessarily psychic--but a heightened empathy, to the point where they can examine the contents of a mind, and influence the emotional conclusions it comes to. In other words, if an Arap Datrebili wants to make a person kill their friend, they can't do it by making the friend look like an enemy, but they can do it by making the one person absolutely hate their friend and view them as an enemy. If that makes sense.

You should start RP'ing again. Especially seen as the gnomes are back at the forefront of the storyline again.

And mike, seeing the sky reflected on the ground is very different to actual illusions like seeing a person who isn't actually there, or stuff like that. Its only in cartoons where heat faze causes people to see things like icecream stands :p

And @ vort: that's a very flimsy/indirect relationship right there and you know it :p

But whatever. The illusions can be physical manifestations instead of mental projections, i don't really care either way.

Varin's illusions work different.
He is able to make others view something different than in reality. For instance, Azuvas was fighting, but Gaurr saw a cloak of Varin placed over Azuvas, making him believe that he was fighting his student.
Another form is that of black animals, which cannot do much more than confuse or scout.

There is one prerequisite, however. Varin needs to make mental contact first in order to place illusions in their minds. This is normally done through eye contact. By closing one's eyes, he can deflect the illusions, and by rational thinking, one can avoid harming his friends (i.e. not attacking, because the one you attack might be your ally).

So, in one sentence, this is a form of physical illusions and not the mental ones that ravnin was talking about.

Ok, now you are completely contradicting yourself:

Varin needs to make mental contact first in order to place illusions in their minds

this is a form of physical illusions and not the mental ones that ravnin was talking about

Ok so firstly to distinguish the two different types of illusion, lets call 'mental illusions' hallucinations, and leave physical illusions as illusions.

Anything to do with 'placing illusions into peoples minds' would be a hallucination. There is actually nothing there, but their minds are being tricked into thinking there is.

(physical) Illusions on the other hand are actually there. The person is actually seeing the illusory image, it is an actual projection that their eyes are seeing, meaning it could be considered 'real', unlike a hallucination which is all in the persons head.

Vort is saying your illusions are not mental tampering but are physical projections. You however are describing them as mental tampering, although like i said, you are contradicting yourself in your statement with that final claim of them being physical illusions.

Err... okay, you got me there. I wasn't totally clear and was thus contradicting myself.
Let me try to correct that.

Varin needs to make mental contact first, in order to make a foe see an illusion. This illusion can be something totally different, like a rock, but the victim sees, feels, smells a person.

Ravnin was talking about an emotional influence, like making Zhar hate Theria soo much that he will kill her. Varin will try to get the same thing done, by making Theria look like himself or Vayu in Zhar's eyes.

I hope I'm more clear now?

I'm sort of waiting for a moment for Varin to pop in the Maughold at a suitable moment.
If you want him to enter the battle in a gallant, yet awkward manner, say so :p

Whenever you want Varin to show up in our lives, that's fine by me. Remember, he's only after Zhar, really.

We were never really talking about the gnomes with their emotive manipulation, as that has nothing to do with illusions.
(to be quite honest i don't know why rav posted anything about them, about the only thing that had anything to do with them was that we said vithar's character, being psychic, could be in cahoots with the gnomes secretly)

And taralom, you are still contradicting what vort has said:

By illusion I mean a physical alteration of what people can see. Like wearing a different coat and putting on a fake moustache and glasses, but with magic and more convincing.

And who are you to say that illusions aren't based in fire magic? They're all about light, which is related to heat, which is related to fire. Do not question the canon.

Just think this: if it has anything to do with their mind, its a hallucination, not an illusion.

Vortigern, it seems you have gone and made an executive decision to changed taraloms character by telling him that his illusions are physical manipulations of light, when he is describing them as mental manipulations of the persons mind.

I still say it would be better to just change 'black magic' to be more fitting of what it really is, instead of still saying its 'fire magic'.
---------

I thought varin was going to be a bad guy?
I was kinda looking forward to a bit of 'old school vs new school' between Zhar and Varin,
but Zhar's still better :p

I know, but this is the way that I've thought out and have been using for the entire time

I thought varin was going to be a bad guy?

Zhar's better, allright, but Varin won't go down easily anymore. Last time I wrote the encounter, meaning that I could make Varin do whatever I wanted. This time, We'll cooperate in writing to write something good. I want something epic :p

Vithar, any time is fine to bring in Ashling. It'll just push the story along to the next bit, which has to happen one of these days.

SWG, I will not be swayed! As I have explained before, there are seven elements to magic. Illusions are based in fire and darkness. Zhar is one of the few magi capable of wielding all seven equally, because he's been practising for, what, 600 years? Vayu is one of the others, because he's just got mad skillz.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Is he that OP? :p
I've got to think of a theory on how Varin has to pose a threat to him in that case.
