Shouldn't we just call Sparta's villagers slaves, then? Then they could be armed and used for fighting as well perhaps? Still not sure exactly how resource collection is going to be, though.

Hm.. you're right on the retreating issue Gfire.. crap. Might be a workaround possible, but I don't wanna dig to deep into that.. I'd say keep on running for now

That leaves you to experiment Kwen, just so you know :p

Ohh I will :p

What about a run toggle? It would act like a special power, meaning you press it and your units can run for a short amount of time. Then when it runs out (basically your units get tired) the button has a long(ish) reset timer.

This way, if a player foolishly decides to run to their location, they had better hope they win the fight, because their units would essentially be too fatigued to retreat effectively.

So you would want to save your run toggle for the possibility that a retreat is needed. Then you can activate it, and retreat safely.

That's an effing badass idea Kwen!
Although rather than a toggle, I think it would probably end up like the Hero Modes. But instead of an increase in attack or armor, speed would be the only thing affected.

Edit: And you could put the special power on the banner carrier with a short enough range that it only covers the one horde. Then you would need the banner carrier in order to run...Although that may not be such a good idea, since banner carriers get killed so easily.

yeah, he meant a power, not a toggle :)
The banner carrier shouldn't be the one deciding it IMO

Now this post has been on standby for quite a looong time.. will be funny to see all the posts made :p

I agree, the 'sprint' power sounds like a good idea. It would certainly make for some interesting tactical options.

indeed it would. Perhaps the lighter units recharge sprint faster?

And they would run slightly faster to begin with.

the problem with banners is that they are unaffected by upgrades such as heavy armor and forged blades, and are the first one into the fight, by themselves. A simple workaround is to place banner carriers at the back of the battalion, or at the side (which was greek). Rome Total War wasn't that far off with it's portret of the phalanx. see link below.

Oh it's quite easy to make them affected :)
Still, I don't know what's best.. The banner is set to be at one spot all the time, so that means if we put him on the side, it will look weird when there's only 2 or 1 units left in the horde (but that isn't really a major issue)
And if we put him behind, there's 3 ranks before him, and if there's 6 or less left, there will be a gap..

but on the front, he's ruining the formation :p

That's another good idea from a gameplay point of view. It's the banner carrier that respawns dead units, (Which I think i remember someone saying that should be disabled) and since said banner carrier has Lauri at a loss as to where to put it, :p why not just remove it altogether?

Banners are a cool addition to most armies, so I do kinda want to keep them.. And compared to BFME1, where it's basically every 6th person being a banner carrier, in 2 it's, what, ever 21st? or something like that..

I'm not really at a loss, as I'd vote for having him on the side ala RTW

The sprint power sounds good, maybe soldiers could run faster and longer as they level up...

Delete the banner carriers, but add a "commander" unit that carries a banner and provides leadership bonus to nearby units. :p
(A recruiting limit for them so a player can't spam them and put like 20 of them on the front lines). :)

Well, there's nothing wrong with putting him on the side. Or even in the middle with a flank on each side.
But the way I see it, I imagine some people will think it's...for lack of a better word, dumb...
It will take some getting used to, that's all I'm saying. :p

And actually, I think I've changed my mind. Banners are almost needed.
...It just wouldn't be right without them.

Perhaps you don't get it.

A banner carrier always has a reserved spot in a horde.
Horde members however, can move between the various spots reserved for them if someone else is killed, to make the horde more tight.

Putting him in the middle with a flank on each side, would indeed be dumb, because not only would there be a hole if you don't have a banner carrier, it would also ruin the Phalanx formation :p
Just remembered that having him on the side can be okay though, without gaps, because he can simply use one position left from the most prioritised soldier, while the rest of the soldiers go to the right.

...Where's the confusion?

I'm just saying that-...Nevermind.

Anyway, banner carriers change position? Maybe in BFME2, which is what this mod will likely be on...
But I don't think banner carriers ever change position in BFME1, maybe that's why i'm confused. My mistake.

This self contradiction is also a little confusing.

Perhaps you don't get it.

A banner carrier always has a reserved spot in a horde.

Having him on the side can be okay though, without gaps, because he can simply use one position left from the most prioritised soldier, while the rest of the soldiers go to the right.
