I agree with most everyone's thoughts. I'm sure after multiple rewatchings I will enjoy it more. I think the reason we are so critical is because the hobbit should be pretty simple to translate to film.

Even if there is more to them, I just can't justify cutting it for the theatrical release to shove in another 20 minutes of completely unnecessary fighting. I mean seriously, it's already a two hour and forty minute movie, did we really need Azog to attack laketown or Gandalf to have a weird light fight in dol guldur?
It was a fine movie. It just wasn't The Hobbit.

NjM, there's a (extended edition) on the end of the Mirkwood and Beorn track names.
The extended edition of Song of the Lonely Mountain wasn't in the Extended Edition ;p

I also noticed there is a part missing from the beginning of 2-12 Song of the Lonely Mountain, that is in the movie. =(

The cutting of Mirkwood (and Beorn for that matter.. I wanted to see more of the Swede) was rubbish from my point of view, then especially for the sake of the barrels.
And I disagree on the movement for supporting the Dwarves vs Smaug fight, and that it should've been in the book aswell. If I'm not way off, Thorin's company waited many days before even daring to venture inside the mountain, still believing Smaug was inside and waiting for them after he cracked their entrance. But he flew to Laketown to get revenge straight after the sacking of the secret entrance, and died pretty darn quick after getting to Laketown. The tension, the questions, "what's he up to, where is he, when's he coming back?", that's what made it work brilliantly in the book. It should've been possible to display that in the movies. Here's a rough draft:
Enter Bilbo
Chat with Smaug
Bilbo exit, almost on fire
Smaug exit
Bilbo panicking, dwarves hear Smaug just outside.
Thorin "Flee, flee for life!" (Denethor reference)
Smaug destroys secret entrance
Dwarves and Bilbo just managed to avoid crunching.
(OPTIONAL ADDITION: Close-up Smaug, "Barrel rider.. hmf.. Barrel this!" and he flies towards Laketown.)
END
Then the next film starts with the company sitting quiet, not daring to venture in for a few days. Then messengers\whatever arrives and tells the tale, possibly told by Bard himself. Because Bard is awesome. The optional part could ruin some of the tension\questions the ignorant could have, so not sure if it should be there. Ignorant? Ah, I mean those who dare not read the book.
Sidenote: Besides Azog, and Bolg, most orcs look fine. I even support the new look of the goblins, mostly because the old ones wouldn't suit talking.

Smaug was incredible.
What bothered me was just the lore stuff. I really dislike how they took Azog out of his timeline, and I am also annoyed by Tauriel using Atheleas. Although it was a nice tie in, and I don't think any other medicine would have quite the effect, the point of calling it kingsfoil was that only the king could use it (Aragorn!).
Other than that, I liked the movie, and I was glad they included that "duel with the dragon" into the movie.

When you look back it the CGI fights look kind of dodgy.

- The "Approaching Mirkwood" shot.
- One shot of Bolg and his orcs chasing down the river (Bolg looked green and unpolished)
- Something looked off when the Master was looking out from his balcony over green screen land.
- In the Gandalf at Dol Guldur sequence, the buildings collapsing looked less than perfect.
- Legolas riding away from Lake Town on the CGI horse at the end of the above video. (Though I thought the wargs looked fine doing the same thing)
- One shot of Smaug with the ropes and carts swinging around looked pretty terrible and video game-y
But all in all, it looked awesome, especially Azog. (Never thought I'd say that!)

I like the subtle hint 3 days until the new trailer. Remember, keep the thread spoiler-free.

Dont know if you guys have already read this, Connolly on his character Dain:
They're basically broadening me, making me wider," he explains, adding that the technology being used on the film is making for long, hard working days. "But let me say, this guy will terrify the life out of you. I have a Mohawk and tattoos on my head. You've got to see it." More recently at DenverCon Sylvester McCoy also alluded to Dain’s size: “Dain Ironfoot is the largest dwarf you’ve ever seen. They made that already large man twice as large.” Also confirmed is that Dain will ride a boar; which means either he will be leading the army atop a boar, Thranduil riding an elk style or that he will be mounted along with a group of boar riders like above (not official artwork, it's from armies of the third age, a game by Kabam). On Yahoo Australia during an interview Connolly said
This is the source, you can find a lot of info in here, pretty exciting! http://themadhobbit....armies-spoilers

And more terrible shopping by WB's awful marketing department. Thorin's got an extra joint in his left arm, his feet are posed incredibly awkwardly with the mail coat, lighting is completely off on Fili and Kili, and Battle of Moria Dwalin is pasted in along with a few orc extras that got killed in DoS.
No fuel left for the pilgrims
