Even if the wood was completely dry, it would be fairly unlikely. The arrow is just moving too fast and bounces off to fast to transfer enough heat to start a fire. With moist wood, it's even more unlikely.
but the point is not to kill the ram, but to kill thoose who bear it, or do you think that ram "floats" in the air moving on its own ?
you cant work all balance only about the ram itself , when theres a squad of man ( around 6 or 8 for mordor and isen, and two boars and 2 dwarfs) who move the whole thing.
And since it would be wery hard to code ram, and the ones who deal with it as target that can be killed, we just have to count these guys in the whole balance mix as well.
And therefore, the rams should be weaker, its not about to chop the ram into chopsticks, its about killing thoose who manipulate the damn heavy thing. Immobilize a ram, and its nothing more then a piece of wood ( unless* someone else picks it up - but since it would be hard to code something like "equipment " and the " crew " that uses it, we just have to take those two into one unit and balance it out thinking about both components )
therefore just decrease rams armor against piercing dmg (archers) around like -10%, and vs upgraded arrows -20%. This wont make archers "siege counter" ( as i speak ONLY about CONTACT siege, no ranged ), but gives wont make the whole thing look like " 4 battalions of FU archers shooting on a ram, and now even scratching it " - makes it more balanced
