Well the weapon that the guy has is a war-hammer, and what is wrong with war-hammers, they are great weapons whenever I use them.
Anyways, back on subject, what should the "Chanpions" use for weapons?

You fight with war hammers? I am sorry but that is a terribly designed war hammer then.

It just looks bad in the pic ;) What I would propose is make them look like a heavier version of the Arnor infantry, but instead of using a single handed sword, give them a double handed sword with the shield strapped to their arm.

That would severely hamper your performance in combat. Give them a 1 and a half hand sword and a shield or just a two handed sword.

Not really, if you have it strapped to your upper arm, they did it in history so why not in fantasy :good:

No effective fighter used a 2 hand sword and a strapped on shield. Maybe if it was 1.5 hand sword. A 2 hand sword really needs two hands to lift. And if you have a shield strapped to one arm it would reduce your mobility and strike force to an unacceptable level.

im sure some of the more martial traditions in history wouldve found brutes wielding heavy armour a stapped on shield and a two hand bastard sword mobility doesnt mean jack if you have the strength and the armor to slice a man in twain

mobility is always an issue. just because you can cut a guy in half, doesnt mean he cant chop your head off or stab you in the chest before you get the chance. like i said, mobility is always an issue.

I think that you guys are picturing a different type of shield then me, because whenever I fight I prefer to use a double handed sword with a shield, and it works fine.

Then it's probably a small buckler...try strapping a full-sized kite to your forearm and tell me how it works for you :p

If you want to get into it you just need to look, if I were you I would try Dagorhir, it isn't exactly what I call extremely accurate, but it hurts less then blunted metal weapons :p Or don't you live in the USA?

Then it's probably a small buckler...try strapping a full-sized kite to your forearm and tell me how it works for you tongue.gif

Lol, definitely not a kite shield, your arm would fall off :crazed: Something like a buckler would work, but with a more Arnor look.

Hitting somebody with a fake weapon is one thing, to cleave through flesh and iron is a totally different matter. The required force to cause injury is immense. Even a small buckler would get in the way and put extra strain on you that is totally unnecessary. When using a two handed sword the small defense of the buckler is way off set by the reduction in mobility and strain. In a long battle you need maximum stamina and mobility. Mobility always always wins over raw strength. When using a two handed sword the buckler would not be able to be used to its full ability b/c you can't take that hand off the sword and still maintain the deadliness and mobility required for combat. Even battle hardened warriors still needed two hands to cleave into armor and flesh with a two hand sword. Since you can't use the buckler in the way it was meant to you loose its worth. On top of that you loose effectiveness of the sword b/c your one arm is going to be encumbered by the buckler. A 2 handed sword needs both hands to be balanced and to swing with deadly force. That is what defines it as a two handed sword. If you can wield it with deadly effect with one hand it is a 1.5 hand sword.

I don't think you quite understand the purpose of the buckler, it was used to block by pushing the enemies weapon away, it was used as a wall between you and the enemies weapon. Why would you have to take your hand off the handle, when the buckler is attached to your arm? Anyways, I'm sure they did it in history for a reason, if it prevented you from using your full strength they would never have used it, but they did :p

Where in history did a fighter use a 2 hand sword with a strapped on buckler? Knocking your opponent away with the buckler should be followed up with a swift side stroke with your sword. The shield is an offensive weapon. You need to push the opponent and his weapon away. Hi you push him your goal should be to put him off balance and unprepared for a follow-up blow. If you block the sword the block should push the sword to the outside and open up the body. This has to be followed by a quick counter attack, otherwise your block with the buckler will put you off balance thus leaving you open to attack. If you are using a two handed sword you have to pull your buckler back and grab the hilt to deliver the blow. This is too slow, it gives the enemy time to recover. For a two handed sword to be worth it in battle you need two hands on it. Thus removing the usefulness of the buckler. The buckler would be used with a short sword like the gladiators, a standard 1 hand longsword, or at most a 1.5 hand sword. A 2 hand sword is used by itself almost like an axe. You primarily use a chopping slashing motion with a 2 hand sword due to the immense power both hands can deliver and the size and weight of a 2 hander produces a lot of force on impact, but without both arms delivering the blow the power is thus cut in halve. Since cutting is less efficient than stabbing the 2 hand sword is useless with one hand, b/c they aren't designed to stab. The blades on a two hand sword are to broad to efficiently pierce armor. Bucklers were most often used by dualist because it is a shield designed for offense against a single enemy. It doesn't provide enough protection to be that much use in a large pitched battle. This is why in large battles the kite shield family is the dominate form of protection. The larger size allows the warrior to deflect blows coming from many sides. As a offensive weapon it can only be used for pushing the enemy back, but in a large pitched battle their isn't the room or time for dualist tactics. Fighting 1v1 is a lot different than 10000v10000. In battle you cannot, I repeat cannot afford the time to get into a 1v1 fight. You need to end the encounter quick and move to the next guy. If you get stuck one opponent and get tunnel visioned on him you will die. Another enemy will just come up and kill you from behind. The weapons and armor of a dualist is a lot different than the weapons and armor of battle.

You can use a buckler as a defensive shield too, it all depends on who is using it. It may be more affective to use a larger shield then a buckler, it's just the type I'm thinking doesn't have a specific name. Since you and me seem to be perfect at agreeing to disagree, why don't we just drop this discussion and just say that the Arnor "Champions" should use something besides a double handed sword, this doesn't mean I'm surrendering to you though :p

I am not saying that the buckler is a bad shield is just that you don't use it much in battle and you definately don't use it with a 2 hand sword.

I think that the champions is poor name really. Something more specific. I think for Arnor heavy infantry they should use the real Arnor heavy infantry. Meaning a Saxon like shield wall, they would have longswords and hand axes. Pressed tightly together they could hold of even cav.

"Champions" would wield the same weapons as the regular infantry. They'd just be more adapt at using them - making them champions :p
