The men of Numenor rarely fought on horse but instead favored heavy infantry.
Though it's an old post, I felt I had to respond to this. The men of Numenor had a quicker mode of transport available to them in their vast fleets of ships, so horses weren't as required to get around swiftly. By the time of Arnor, however, they would have had to adapt to this new situation of ruling and protecting a kingdom that was threatened from far inland, where ships couldn't take them. While i'm not saying Arnor was crazy cavalry nuts, they would have had to use them a lot more, especially in battle, by that time.
But when they go into shield wall formation they should touch the ground It's a lot easier to prop a heavy shield on the ground, then to hold it 8 inches above the ground.
Really though, you don't need a larger shield. Look at the Gondor/Arnor foot soldier's defensive formations - with shields held in that manner, the body is protected by the shield completely, with only the sword arm, head and feet exposed. Plus it allows for mobility in combat - a massive shield that you have to rest on the ground gives you a lot of cover, but at the same time you're strapped to it, and if it's resting on the ground, ultimately it just impedes your mobility in combat.
Personally, for heavy infantry, i'd go for some sort of Palantir Guard, garbed in mail cuirasses and tabards with the Arnor symbol and/or maybe a palantir device on them. Give them two handed swords - Arnor footmen are for holding the main battle line, these blokes should be about dishing out the pain - maybe give them an area effect damage as well.

I like your ideas on the Arnor Heavy Infantry unit, but I still prefer Champions, maybe we could call them something Like Arnorian Paladins. I don't think I'll ever get over the "dishing out the pain" thing you said, I might use for a sig!

Glad you liked it. The things the mind comes up with at 3AM...
Honestly though, Champions just doesn't sound right. A champion is typically a single unit, like...say...a hero.
B'sides, Gondor has both Citadel and Fountain guards. One would think Arnor would have men appointed to protect their Palantirs, no?

I agree with AA on that one, but what about calling them Paladins?
I don't know about Paladin...it doesn't seem to fit. Don't ask me to explain why...it just doesn't work for me.

Last time I'm saying it."Champions" would wield the same weapons as the regular infantry. They'd just be more adapt at using them - making them champions
Oh, and just to mention it...for my own devices (which do not concern you all), my picture of the Arnor military is this; the standard rank and file are the Arnorohtar (Arnor-Soldier), with the veterans being Arnoroquen (Arnor-Knight).
That's all I'm saying of it, though if you want to know more, contact me privately

What ever this new heavy infantry unit uses, it shouldn't be sword and shield, then it wouldn't be unique

But nuclear warheads would still work so much better...

The idea is to have a unique heavy infantry unit, Champions is just a name I came up for them, that doesn't mean that they have to be Champions, it was just something we could call it until we came up with a better name.
What ever this new heavy infantry unit uses, it shouldn't be sword and shield, then it wouldn't be unique
But the whole idea of having a heavy infantry unit isn't unique since there are already enough heavy infantry factions and Arnor already has a sort of heavy infantry unit, the spearmen of the havens. If u give them a heavy sword infantry unit, then that takes away from the uniqueness of the Dwarves, Isengard, and Gondor to an extent since they use a lot of infantry, and it's not as though Arnor is weak enough atm that they need a new heavy unit, so I don't see the point in adding one. The only changes needed imo are a nerf to their Royal Knights, but that's it
